Secretary of Economy Ildefonso Guajardo stated in an interview with Imagen Radio:
“The prevailing opinion is that the fact that the timing requirements have been complied with thus far is a good sign that negotiations will begin on August 16th. However, in examining the details, it is evident that defining some points may be very difficult, and that some elements of NAFTA are clearly out of date, thus opening the possibility of renegotiating certain portions of the accord which have in the past been the subject of disagreement. But, in general, many of these elements coincide. We will keep in mind that Canada’s insistence on maintaining the Chapter 19 dispute resolution proceeding as a condition to entering the renegotiation, and related dispute resolution panels, which has been a topic of debate in the U.S. for the past twenty years, and which now must be reexamined by both Mexico and Canada.”
